How To Know What Your People Need To Know How To Do In The Next 5 Years

I have a bunch of calls and meetings with clients and potential clients either side of the summer break on their next year's training plans. They've all got very specific needs but also some pretty universal ones.

If you're going through this process yourself, on top of your own in-house training needs analysis, here is a prioritised list of skills gleaned and aggregated from various sources that a workplace leader in New Zealand should aim to develop (or refresh) in the next five years:

  1. Adaptability and Resilience: Given the rapidly changing business environment, leaders should be adaptable and resilient in the face of uncertainty and disruption.
  2. Cultural Competency and Inclusion: New Zealand's diverse workforce requires leaders to understand and respect different cultures and promote inclusivity.
  3. Digital Literacy: With the increasing importance of technology, leaders should be digitally literate to leverage digital tools for productivity and innovation.
  4. Effective Communication: Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are crucial for conveying ideas, building relationships, and resolving conflicts.
  5. Emotional Intelligence: Leaders need to be emotionally intelligent to understand and manage their own emotions and those of their team members.
  6. Strategic Thinking: The ability to think strategically and make informed decisions is vital for long-term success.
  7. Change Management: As businesses evolve, leaders must excel in change management to guide their teams through transitions smoothly.
  8. Collaboration and Team Building: Building strong teams and fostering collaboration among diverse members is essential.
  9. Data Analysis and Interpretation: Data-driven decision-making is becoming increasingly important, so leaders should be able to analyze and interpret data effectively.
  10. Customer-Centricity: Focusing on customer needs and experiences is key in providing value and staying competitive.
  11. Problem-Solving Skills: Leaders should be adept problem solvers to address complex issues and challenges.
  12. Ethical Leadership: Maintaining high ethical standards and integrity is crucial for building trust within and outside the organisation.
  13. Continuous Learning: Leaders should commit to continuous learning to stay updated with industry trends and best practices.
  14. Sustainability Awareness: With growing sustainability concerns, leaders should integrate sustainable practices into their decision-making.
  15. Remote Leadership Skills: Given the rise of remote work, leaders should develop skills for managing and leading remote teams effectively.
  16. Networking and Relationship Building: Building strong professional networks and relationships can open up opportunities and resources.
  17. Financial Acumen: Understanding financial principles and budgeting is essential for effective resource allocation.
  18. Project Management: Proficiency in project management ensures efficient execution of initiatives and strategies.
  19. Conflict Resolution: Leaders should be skilled in conflict resolution to maintain a harmonious work environment.
  20. Global Business Awareness: Awareness of global business trends and opportunities can help organisations expand internationally.

These skills will help workplace leaders in New Zealand navigate the evolving business landscape and lead their teams to success in the coming years.
