Why I should receive this award

I was at a Christmas function recently where two separate PSANZ members described me, to my face, as "humble". I would not describe myself as humble and their comments surprised me. Ironically, the very next day, I started this application and am asked to say why I should be named as speaker of the year. I am humble enough to hesitate convincingly before declaring that I should receive this award, given the continued high calibre of previous recipients and likely current applicants.

My life and career have been straight lines of NOT putting myself forward for awards. Humility aside, I am a firm believer in the work being the reward. The effort is not merely a means to an end, it is at least half the end in itself. I have inarguably done, and continue to do, the work - so I have to be in the conversation. To convince you, first I have to convince myself. Here goes...

Why am I in the PSANZ at all in the first place? What is the point of the awards? Aside from the usual and obvious benefits of membership such as skills, contacts, collegiality etc, a major driver for me is to help others up. To a degree, that's altruistic but given my career as a trainer, I know it to be true that helping others develop is a great lever for self-development. To me, that's the point of awards such as these, both for the applicants to be recognised or to learn from their shortcomings in the process, and for the organisation, even the judges, to extract lessons from the analysis and celebration. I MC a lot of awards and see the differing impacts on the membership as a whole when awards are dominated by a small group and when they are distributed, especially over time. Part of the intent of awards isn't just to recognise or to celebrate, it has to be to motivate and incentivise. A factor in my favour for receiving this award would be that it would be my first. I believe that would be incentivising for others on the cusp or on the up.

I've been in the speaking business for a long time, yet only really in the last two years have I fully immersed myself as an active PSANZer. Given the PSANZ's recent re-emphasising of its raison d'etre as professionalism, I may or may not be the best at any or all of the various judging categories but I am a great example and role model for those within PSANZ aspiring to genuine professionalism and wanting to see the 'why' and the 'how'. Relatively new blood like myself being recognised with such an award would send a powerful signal to potential professional members of the benefits of involvement, hustle and application.

Written Testimonials

Mark Kidd: Safe365 Awards, Auckland, Nov 2019 (Click here to download original email mark@safe365.co.nz )

Terry has been our MC at the Safe365 Safest Place to Work Awards for the last two years. We love the fact that he is well organised, allows the proceedings to flow naturally while keeping to the run sheet and keeping people on point. Terry’s personal style and approach allows for a very natural connection with the audience - it is a beautiful combination of professional and casual all rolled up into one so that people can relate to him on a very personal level. Independently of my own comment, one of my Safe365 colleagues commented on Terry after last night was …. “ He was soooooo good!” That about says it all. I wouldn’t hesitate to engage Terry again for our events and definitely recommend him to others – you won’t be disappointed.

Professor Doug Waldo and Karen Winfield: OrgDev GROW Conference, Surfers Paradise, Feb 2019 (Click here for screenshot of original LinkedIn recommendations)

Thank you Terry for being our MC at our recent HR-Grow conference at the Gold Coast - you helped it be the success it was! Your professionalism with managing last minute changes was appreciated and your calm nature also helped myself and the other organisers to stay at ease. The humour you added which was right on target helped the energy to stay light and energised throughout the 2 days. Thanks again and hope to see you back. (Karen)

Terry recently MC’d our HR Grow Conference in Gold Coast, AU, expertly guiding us through a packed 2-day agenda. He not only directed every session and managed every transition like the master he is, but he did so with great wit and enthusiasm. He made our learning fun! Terry is arguably the most dynamic, entertaining speaker with whom I have shared the podium. He has an uncanny ability to share expertise infused with humor, and our conference was a success in large part to his leadership. Terry has my greatest respect and highest recommendation!

Shaun Lines, GROW Events, Not-For-Profit Financial Managers Conference, Auckland, Feb 2019 (Click here to download original email shaun@grow.co.nz )

There are keys to hosting great events, and we have found the energy and inspiration that Terry Williams brings to our events leaves people enthused, inspired and grateful. Always the professional with an obvious heart for people, he has just the right mix of challenge and encouragement to what he brings. We love him!

Karrar Farrar, Communications & Group Services Manager, The Booker for NZ Certified Builders, National Conference Christchurch July 2019 (Click here to download original email karla@nzcb.nz )

Terry was a real asset as our MC at our last conference back in June 2019. Not only is he good at what he does, he’s very funny as well. You could hear laughter all throughout the Christchurch Town Hall when he was on stage which made me feel at ease when I was racing around making sure the event was going to plan. On top of being the MC throughout the two day conference, he was the Gala Dinner MC and also the final Keynote speaker. He’s very adaptable, professional and someone you can count on to do an awesome job! I would highly recommend Terry for any event.

Another outstanding presentation from yourself at the recent NZCB Conference in Christchurch, always a highlight to listen to you speak

Nicky Remkes, Director Tom, Dick & Harry Event Management, Multiple Events including NSANZ Conference Feb 2019 (Click here for screenshot of original LinkedIn recommendation)

Terry is a natural on stage and connects seamlessly with his audiences in humorous way which is professional and on point. We received great attendee feedback from Terry's session and I would happily recommend him as a professional speaker or MC. I hope to use Terry more in the future.
